not necessarily born in virginia, due to the influence of the navy. the navy brings lots of people in from across the nation and across the world. the richmond area is an urban area, but it's probably the most conservative urban region in this area and maybe one of the most conservative in the country. of course, is a traditional area, particularly because of the west side of richmond, the city of richmond, the east side is heavily african-american and the west side is predominately white and his conservative with a high nativity rate. some of the surrounding counties have become more diverse over the years, but by and large it is also a conservative suburban ex-urban area. those are three. you may include far south virginia and a world unto itself. it used to be substantially republican, but mountain valley republican, a more liberal republican flavor intuit. then it went democratic and now it's very conservative republican, in part because coal is such a major part of the economy down there. and there is outside virginia, on the north carolina border, many of those counties are majority african

gas stations that had both power and gas. today the u.s. navy ordered three helicopter carrier ships to the new jersey and new york coast. the "uss wasp," the "uss carter hall," and the "uss mesa verde" will provide relief efforts the need be. the new york police department today released this rather amazing video of helicopter search and rescue teams airlifting people to safety off of rooftops in the new york city borough of staten island. staten island's death toll stands at 12, out of a growing national death toll of 64 americans. new jersey governor chris christie today was with president obama at the site of today's landfall in atlantic city. they were on marine one together, the president's helicopter, touring some of the cities in ruin along the new jersey shorelines. both politicians, both leaders today going out of their way to emphasize that day three of this massive, multi-state, ongoing natural disaster is still no time for partisan politics. >> i want to thank the president. we spent an significant afternoon together, surveying the damage up and down the new jersey coast

the federal government is sending this crews and equipment from the army and the navy. the army sending in an elite unwatering team as they call it. the same crew went down to the gulf coast following hurricane katrina from illinois. they're coming in. also the navy sending in pumps they normally use on ships. take a look behind me. this is the staten island ferry service. the service is currently suspended at the moment indefinitely. this police tape here is, in front of the battery park underpass here because there is 50 feet of water that is still there. now some of the subways did begin limited service as 6:00 this morning. and we can tell you that five 1/2 million people ride in those subways each and every day. governor cuomo has now declared a transportation emergency and says fees for trains, subways and buses will be waved today. the state's metropolitan transportation authority says the system when it is closed costs $18 million in revenue to their pockets. traffic has been a mess. take a look at aerial pictures we have coming in. that is because people aren't able to use publ
